In warhammer 40k, does it matter what color you paint your figures? (space marines being an ideal example)?

No, that is the fun part of the hobby. You can paint your models in any color you want to make them stand out on the table. Especially space marines as there are hundreds (1000) chapters each with their own colors, markings, etc. Paint them the way you like and want them to look!
